Art Exhibits
In January 2004
we launched the Canterbury House Art Exhibition Series, featuring
art exhibitions, public presentations, and interactive opportunities
for students and professional visual and media artists. The exhibitions
and presentations – public talks, workshops,
and performances – are designed to spark inquiry into spirituality,
global connections, and personal metamorphosis.
Recent exhibitions have included "Interrupted by God," photographs by the Very Rev. Tracey Lind, Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland, Ohio; artwork from The Prison Creative Arts Project; "Breaking our Silences, Finding our Voices," an exhibit of written and visual art by students affected by psychological disorders; journal entries and drawings by Elissa Karstu; and "A Hundred Year Odyssey," a journal in comics by Michelle Bien. Local artists and students frequently display their work at Canterbury House.
December 2008: "Business Work" and "In Lak'ech" - Christine Hucal
Christine Hucal, a student of the U of M School of Art and Design, presents work from her ongoing projects: "Business Work" and "In Lak'ech." In "Business Work" (right wall of Canterbury House) Christine explores the comical idea of what it means to "grow up and go to work." With "In Lak'ech" Christine uses photo projections and double exposure photographs to explore a Mayan statement of unity, "In Lak'ech," which translates to "I am another yourself" or "You are the other me." Projecting faces, animals, plants, earth and water onto herself she attempts to blur the lines of modern day divisions between humans and the natural elements. On display during Canterbury House office hours: MTThF 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. |
